Town Board

Responsibilities of the Town Board
The Town Board (aka the Town Council) is the legislative authority and governing board of the town. The Town Board consists of four (4) elected Council persons, two elected for four (4) years (prior to the ward system) and two members elected for two years. Once the terms of the current members expire on Dec 31, 2017, all council members will serve for a term of two years starting Jan 1, 2018 and represent the ward they are elected by. The council is chaired by the Supervisor, who is elected at large for a term of two years.

 Responsibilities include:
  • Filling vacancies in town offices: elected and appointed
  • Selecting professionals: attorneys, accountant, engineers, planners
  • Hiring of town employees
  • Adopting a budget and fixing salaries
  • Additional functions as specified in New York State Law

 

Meetings
  • First and third Tuesday of every month (or scheduled as needed)
  • Work session 
    • starts 6 pm
    • duration varies based on agenda items
    • precedes the official meeting and allows for items on the official meeting agenda to be discussed among the town board members, guest presenters, and the professionals (attorney, accountant, etc. as needed). 
    • Public input will be accommodated during the official meeting (see below), or at the discretion of the Supervisor 
  • Official meeting 
    • Starts immediately after the work session 
    • Begins with the pledge to the flag
    • Public comment on items discussed during the work session allows public input to items on the official meeting agenda 
    • Bills are paid by voting on a list of vouchers called an abstract
    • Resolutions are discussed and voted on
    • Minutes are approved
    • Executive session if needed*
    • Committee reports - board members report on their ongoing activities
    • Public comment on any town business and community announcements
*Executive sessions are required to allow the town board members to hear items involving legal actions, employee matters, and other items provided for in New York's Open Meetings Law. See New York State Committee on Open Government for additional information on open meetings and executive sessions.
