| This schoolhouse was built in the early 1900’s. Following the cessation of its use as a schoolhouse, the building remained vacant abandoned for many years. The Town of Mamakating purchased the building in 1976 from the Ellenville School District for $1.00. Over the years, the building became extremely deteriorated. In approximately 1997, the town began making repairs to the building and two years later received a member item grant through the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation that continued the renovation process. The Sullivan County Historical Society approached the Town Board with the idea of turning it into the Mamakating Historical Society and meeting room. And so it is today! This museum is a wealth of information, historical data, artifacts, pictures and models of the Mamakating area. | |

The Mamakating Historical Society was formed on June 1st, 2000
by a group of people who are interested in saving the history of our town. We
meet once a month in our museum, it is open every Tuesday form 11:00 am to
3:00 pm. In our museum, you will find many pictures and artifacts of
Mamakating from past years. You will also find many histories of all the
hamlets in our town. Walk around the museum and enjoy models of the lead
mines, Indian villages and the canal that ran through our town. We are always looking for new members, so please join us! John Masten, Town Historian jmasten@citlink.net |
