Family Festival at Mamakating Park

On Sunday, February 26, 2006, the Mamakating Rotary Club hosted the first "Family Festival at Mamakating Park". Though the temperatures were frigid, the new Ice Rink was busy with skaters. The Ice Rink, new this year, was a collaborative effort between Mamakating's Rotary Club and the Town. Rotary provided the concrete base, liner and some tools for resurfacing, while the Town erected the Pavilion over the rink.

Years ago, Rotary held a similar festival at the park, however, with the new rink came a renewed spirit for the festival. This years events included Ice Skating, crafts (children of all ages worked on stained glass, bead art, bird houses and Popsicle stick creations). Craft vendors were gathered to sell their wares, and clowns provided entertainment as well as the most popular sport "face painting". There was even a bubble gum blowing contest and a "guess how many pieces of gum" contest, with the winner taking home 1,007 pieces of gum. Rotary also provided food and baked goods for everyone's eating pleasure. The famous "Denman" horses were on site providing free horse and carriage rides as well.

Most outdoor events were cancelled (relay race, hula hoop dancing contest and frozen basketball hoop shoot) as the near zero wind chills kept everyone inside most of the day. If there was snow on the ground, many more events would have been possible.

Next year Rotary plans a bigger festival with more events, more food and some entertainment (figure skaters perhaps?).
